Assignment (due Sunday on Canvas)

Disease Literacy

Disease Literacy is having sufficient conceptual knowledge and skills to understand basics and learn more when faced with addressing a disease.  This can be especially useful in facing a disease personally, assisting someone else, or making broader decisions related to public policy.

Note: medical professionals have access to data bases (like local disease occurrences) and knowledge to apply that information to individual cases.  If you have any medical concerns, consider gaining the perspective of a trained professional.

  2. Diabetes Types I and II:  (a) Distinguish between type I, type II, and gestational diabetes, (b) list potential risk factors for diabetes; and (c) describe the impact of diabetes on organs throughout the body.

Science Information: (a) Distinguish between primary and secondary sources of science information and the advantages of each form of information; (b) explain that if you were scanning a scientific paper (primary source), which parts you would read and why; and (c) list secondary sources you could use to learn more about diseases, including why you feel they are quality sources of information.
