Defenses Overview
Media Piece
Defenses Overview Objective
Develop an original media piece that creatively describes the human defenses against pathogens.
Information from the online guides can assist in developing your media piece.
Assignment (due Sunday on Canvas)
Defensive Overview
Our human defenses against pathogens and parasites are complex, but understanding them is helpful in making decisions related to the current pandemic. Design an original and creative media piece that explains the basic human defenses. This can be a story, a comic strip, labeled sketches, etc.
Include in your overview of human defenses:
- Pathogen: A description of the pathogen your hypothetical body will be defending itself against. Include its (a) name, (b) type (virus, bacteria, etc.), (c) how it is transmitted, and (d) why it is potentially harmful to humans. You can create this pathogen or use a real pathogen as an example.
- Barriers: A description of the barrier(s) the pathogen has to pass through to infect the body.
- Inflammation: Include the steps of inflammation, including what these cells contribute to the inflammation process: (a) wounded cells, (b) natural killer cells (type of T lymphocyte), (c) neutrophils, and (d) monocytes.
- Cell-Mediated Immunity: Include what the following cells do: (a) macrophages, (b) helper T cells, (c) cytotoxic T cells, and (d) memory T cells.
- Antibody-Mediated Immunity: Includes what the following cells/products do: (a) plasma B cells, (b) antibodies, and (c) memory B cells.
- Shutting Down: Describe what happened to the pathogen and what the suppressor T cells do to complete the immune process.
