Assignment (due Sunday on Canvas)
Infectious Diseases
We are living in extraordinary times with the emergence of COVID-19 while dealing with existing diseases like tuberculosis and AIDS. Hopefully, if you were to look back at your portfolio in ten years, the landscape of infectious diseases will have improved, or at least changed. This assignment is selecting two infectious diseases and describing what it is like living in a world with these human diseases.
Note: this does not have to be an infectious disease you have personally encountered, but it can be a reflection on your experiences with COVID-19 or other diseases, if you would like to be able to document the experience.
Create a media piece that describes the current state of two infectious diseases (your choice):
- A parasitic disease (worm, fungus, or protist). Include: (a) the common and scientific name of the parasite, (b) how it is transmitted to humans, (c) the impact on an individual’s body, (d) where the parasitic infections primarily occur (geographic distribution), (e) whether there is an effective vaccine, and (f) possible treatments for a person who has the disease.
- A pathogenic disease (bacteria or virus). Include: (a) the common and scientific name of the pathogen, (b) how it is transmitted to humans, (c) the impact on an individual’s body, (d) where the pathogen infections primarily occur (geographic distribution), (e) whether there is an effective vaccine, and (f) possible treatments for a person who has the disease.
