Planning Ahead

It has been really hard to plan ahead with the uncertainty we are all facing. But there are some things we can control, and for Mark and me, that means starting work on a huge garden to teach from this summer. This will be by far the largest garden we’ve ever planted, but if we can fence out our resident deer, there may even be extra produce for our local food bank. There is something so hopeful about starting with a pile of dirt and a handful of seeds.

Additional Respiratory & Urinary Videos

This mixed media piece effectively shows some of the impacts of cigarette smoking on health.

Cigarettes and other tobacco products are more than just nicotine, and some of the chemicals have known correlation with disease.

Sometimes it helps to use two different forms of media to convey the same (or similar) information about the human body. In this video, a two-dimensional poster and three-dimensional model both teach about the structure of urinary tract organs.

Another look at the kidney with an unusual vintage stain.

Looking for a cool idea for the final portfolio? How about a mini-poster for each outcome? This format can pack in a lot of information in one place.

Behind-the-Scenes

We are trying to bring the human body to life without just focusing on textbook anatomy and physiology. Luckily, you can find just about anything on eBay, including this box of weird anatomical models.

We’ve been spending so much time outside in the yard shooting videos that it has been possible to enjoy a lot of spring.

Before

We were guessing this course would be remote, so we headed to the coast at the end of winter term to get a few photos and videos to use in the class. We had big dreams of flying a kite to go along with respiration…

After

Who knew flying a kite could be stressful? This one seemed to like the bushes, so now it’s hanging up for decoration instead.

Too big?

We are fortunate to have some land to work with. Most of it is set aside for wildlife, but this piece had non-native blackberries, thistles, & a lot of holes. If this is too much to water this summer, we may convert some to forage crops for our deer.

Happy as can be!

For us, the more to do, the better. Right now, most of our time is shooting videos, making webpages, & editing. But we have three summer courses ahead, and it means having to start working on those too. A garden will be the perfect place to learn: a natural and beautiful laboratory.
